Schlegel case study: How Fertility+ expands workplace healthcare provision

How can companies expand their corporate health insurance with a benefit that provides meaningful support to employees while strengthening their attractiveness as an employer? The Schlegel case study shows how Fertility+ combines financial support for fertility treatment with medical advice, confidential access and a modern employee benefits strategy.

Why Schlegel introduced Fertility+

Schlegel already provides its employees with employer-funded corporate health insurance. Fertility+ has expanded this offering to include financial support for fertility treatment and elective egg freezing, as well as medical advice relating to women’s and men’s health.

The decision reflects the company’s belief that personal and health-related challenges do not simply stop at the workplace door. An unfulfilled desire to have a child can affect people for months or even years. Medical appointments need to be coordinated with working hours, while employees may also face high personal costs and significant emotional strain.

Schlegel wants to make medical support more accessible and sees Fertility+ as part of a modern people strategy that combines family-friendly policies, employee retention and employer attractiveness.

What employees receive

Through Fertility+, employees can receive financial support for intrauterine insemination, IVF and ICSI treatment, medication, cryopreservation and treatment involving donor sperm. Social egg freezing, meaning the elective freezing of eggs for potential future use, can also be included.

Employees also receive access to Onuava’s digital health platform. Here, they can find medically reviewed information and arrange personal consultations with healthcare professionals and doctors.

In addition to fertility, the platform covers pregnancy, menopause, preventive healthcare, and women’s and men’s health. Specialist medical consultations can usually take place online within just a few days.

Fertility+ therefore combines financial protection with medical guidance and personal support.

Confidentiality builds trust

When providing services relating to fertility and reproductive health, it is particularly important that personal information is handled confidentially.

Fertility+ and the Onuava platform are used independently of the employer. Schlegel does not learn which employees attend consultations or claim insurance benefits.

This protects employees’ privacy while also reducing the administrative burden on the HR team. The company does not need to review medical documents, make individual decisions or manage sensitive personal cases.

A valuable addition to existing benefits

The Schlegel example shows that introducing Fertility+ does not require companies to develop an entirely new benefits structure. It can be added strategically to an existing corporate health insurance scheme.

Traditional corporate health insurance often focuses on dental care, optical services or general healthcare budgets. Fertility+ expands this range to include an area of life that is rarely covered, despite its significant impact on employees’ wellbeing.

Companies gain a benefit that provides meaningful support to employees, strengthens a family-friendly workplace culture and recognises different life plans and family models. At the same time, it creates a visible point of differentiation in the competition for skilled employees.

Supporting the introduction

For a new health benefit to be used effectively, it must be communicated clearly and sensitively.

At the start of the partnership, Onuava introduced the offering to Schlegel employees through in-person presentations. Fertility+, the digital platform and the available consultation services were explained, and employees were able to ask questions and find out more without any obligation.

Formats like these are particularly important when communicating sensitive health topics. Presentations, webinars and regular communication help to build trust and reduce concerns or hesitation.

What other companies can learn from Schlegel

The partnership between Schlegel and Onuava demonstrates that modern workplace healthcare provision does not have to end with traditional supplementary benefits.

Benefits should be selected according to the tangible value they provide to employees. With Fertility+, Schlegel is helping to close an important gap in support while offering a solution that is confidential, clearly structured and compatible with existing corporate health insurance schemes.

This transforms an additional insurance component into a credible expression of care and modern family-friendly employment practices.
